Guild Wars Error Codes

Error codes are messages that appear in the game client and explain why the game isn’t working properly. Each message includes a brief explanation of the problem followed by a unique number that tells ArenaNet what went wrong when you encountered the error.

Below is a list of the most common error codes that can appear in Guild Wars, as well as solutions that will help you troubleshoot the problem. For any other error codes that aren't included below, please contact our support team with a detailed description of the problem and the full error message.

Error Codes

Error 004 (Code=004)

Error Message

"Guild Wars was unable to complete the operation.

Please try again in a few minutes. (Code=004)"

What is an Error Code=004?

An Error 4 is indicative of a server error. The server may be inaccessible due to a new update, a bug, network issues in or around the data center, or it may have crashed.

How do I fix an Error Code=004?

This error points to an issue with one or more of our game servers, so we encourage patience while our server programmers work to find and address the problem. While you're waiting, you can follow the official Guild Wars Twitter account for details and updates about the situation, or can submit a ticket if you're still unable to login after several hours.

Error 005 (Code=005)

Error Message

"Guild Wars was unable to connect to the game server due to a network error. This may be caused by Internet routing issues or a server network failure.

If this problem persists, please visit the Guild Wars support website. (Code=005)"

What is an Error Code=005?

An Error 5 indicates a network issue, often caused by an antivirus program, firewall, or router blocking your connection to the game servers.

How do I fix an Error Code=005?

Here are some steps you can take to try and address the issue:

  1. Add Gw.exe or GwSetup.exe to your firewall's exception list. If you have already allowed Guild Wars in the past, please double-check the exceptions; on some rare occasions, firewalls will decide to block Guild Wars after it has patched. If adding an exception does not help, try uninstalling the firewall software and logging into the game again.
  2. If you are using a router, please open and/or forward both TCP port 6112 and TCP port 80 within the router's settings. If you are connecting to Guild Wars while on a campus or business network, please consult your network's administrator to verify that these ports are available.
  3. If you are using a wireless router, try connecting your computer directly to the router using an Ethernet cable.
  4. Try temporarily disabling or uninstalling any internet security, antivirus, or anti-spyware applications and re-launching the client. If this resolves the connection issue, you will need to configure these applications to let you play Guild Wars while they are running. (Please contact the software provider if you do not know how to make these adjustments.)

If none of these steps help to address the issue, please contact our Technical Support team with a detailed description of the problem so they can assist you!

Error 007 (Code=007)

Error Message

"Your connection to the server was lost. Please check your Internet connection. (Code=007)"

What is an Error Code=007?

An Error 7 indicates a general disconnect from the game server. This will happen whenever your game loses connection to the game server—whether due to an internet hiccup, a weak connection, or a bug that causes the server to disconnect from the client.

How do I fix an Error Code=007?

In most cases, you will be able to reconnect to the game immediately. Disconnects should only become a cause for concern if they prevent you from playing or if you are repeatedly disconnected whenever you try to play.

If you're connected to a weak or variable internet, you may want to find a more stable connection before reconnecting to the game. You can also follow these troubleshooting steps if you experience issues while playing on a stable connection:

  1. Completely exit the game and close the client. Wait five minutes, then re-launch the game and try again.
  2. Reset your router and modem. Rebooting your devices can help fix several common connection problems, improve slow connections, and clear out any issues stored in their memory.
  3. If you’re using a wireless router to connect to the internet, try bypassing your router by connecting directly to your modem with an Ethernet cable.
  4. Reboot your PC. Giving your computer a chance to reset can fix several issues that might affect your connectivity to the game.
  5. Temporarily disable any security software such as Norton, AVAST, AVG, or McAfee, and then re-launch the game. If you are able to log in successfully, try updating your programs or creating an exception for Guild Wars.
  6. Try disabling all startup items to make sure that no background programs or processes are causing this problem.
  7. Ensure you have the latest drivers for your network adapters and router.

If you are unable to find a solution, please contact our Technical Support team with a detailed description of the problem so they can provide assistance!

How do I fix an Error Code=011?

There are a few things to check if you're receiving an Error 11 when trying to log in:

  • Remember: your password is case-sensitive, meaning that all capital and lowercase letters must match the password used to access the account.
  • Make sure your CAPS LOCK key is not enabled when typing your password.
  • In the Account Name field, ensure your email address is correct.

If you've confirmed all of the above, here are a few additional steps you can take:

  • Type out your password in a notepad document—ensuring that there are no extra spaces or line breaks. Then highlight, copy, and then paste the password into the Password field on the login screen.
  • Un-check the 'Remember Account Name and Security Answer' box and re-launch the client. In the blank fields, re-enter your Account Name (your email address), password, and a character on the account.
  • Try resetting your password.

If you are unable to find a solution, please contact our Support team with a detailed description of the problem and the error message you are receiving.

If you do encounter this error, please submit a ticket so the customer support team can help you make the necessary adjustments and correct the problem.

An Error 29 will appear during character creation if you attempt to create a new character with a name that is already in use by another player or character.

How do I fix an Error Code=029?

When creating a new character in Guild Wars, you will need to choose a unique name that is not currently in use by any other character. Try experimenting with variants of the name or thinking of another name that is not already in use.

You can also read up on more character-creation tips on the official wiki.

How do I fix an Error Code=031?

The game will automatically prevent the creation of most characters with obscene or offensive names.

Please ensure that you are selecting a name that does not aim to offend others.

If you are concerned that your account is being accessed by an unauthorized party, we'd recommend resetting your password to prevent misuse of your account. If you continue to experience disconnects, you can also submit a ticket so our customer support team can help you protect your account.

An Error 41 means that you've tried to create too many characters on the account within the last hour.

How do I fix an Error Code=041?

While the number of characters you can create per hour is high enough that it should not affect most users, players attempting to disrupt the servers by flooding them with new characters will eventually receive an Error 41. How do I fix an Error Code=043?

You will need to purchase additional character slots or delete an existing character if you want to create a new character. You can also purchase the expansions (if you have not already), as each campaign comes with two additional character slots when redeemed on your account.

  • In some cases, the account is banned due to a verified hacking attempt. If we detect that your account has been compromised, we will try to ban it as quickly as possible to prevent any tampering with your characters, inventory, or progress.

You can read more about the circumstances that can lead to an account suspension in these articles:

Note that the message and duration of the ban varies based on the offense.

How do I fix an Error Code=045?

You are always welcome to contact our support team for more information or to appeal a ban on your own account. Please note that we will never disclose information about any other account than your own; if you have a friend, partner, or spouse with questions about a suspension, they will need to contact the support team directly.

Error 058 (Code=058)

Error Message

"Guild Wars was unable to connect to any login servers. This is very likely caused by an Internet routing issue.

If this problem persists, please visit the Guild Wars support website. (Code=058)"

What is an Error Code=058?

An Error Code 58 indicates a network issue: often caused by an antivirus, firewall, or router blocking your connection to the game servers.

How do I fix an Error Code=058?

Here are some steps you can take to address the issue:

An Error 102 indicates that you are trying to enter an incorrect or invalid Access Key—whether creating a new account or adding an Access Key to an existing account.

How do I fix an Error Code=102?

Ensure the accuracy of the Serial Code you're entering into the game. Some characters are easily mistaken for others, so be sure that you are entering the correct alphanumeric characters to match your key. Here are a few tips:

  • 6, 8, 9 and B can look very similar, so try each
  • There are no I's (eyes), O's (oh's) or 0's (zeros) in codes, only 1's (ones), J's (jays) and Q's (cues)
  • J's are sometimes hard to discern, as the "loop" at the bottom may not be easy to see. You might try "J" rather than a 1.

If you continue to run into issues, take a moment to contact our support team for assistance.

If the key was a recent purchase, you will need to follow up with the retailer from whom you purchased the key:

  • If you purchased a key from an external retailer, please contact the retailer where you purchased the key for assistance.
  • If you were issued a defective Access Key via the official Guild Wars store, please contact our support team for assistance. Please include the 25-digit key, the email address of your account, and the last four digits of the credit card used to purchase the key.

Error 121 (Code=121)

What is an Error Code=121?

We often run promotional events for Guild Wars that allow players to preview upcoming content or invite friends and family to try out the game for a period of time. Some of these promotional events are temporary, which means the access keys used to participate can expire. How do I fix an Error Code=121?

If you've already purchased and used an Access Key to create your account and still receive this error, please contact the retailer where you purchased the key:

  • If you purchased a key from an external retailer, please contact the retailer where you purchased the key for assistance.
  • If you were issued a defective Access Key via the official Guild Wars store, please contact our support team for assistance. Please include the 25-digit key, the email address of your account, and the last four digits of the credit card used to purchase the key.

What is an Error Code=224?

Error 227 (Code=227)

Error Message

"We don't recognize your account login information. Please try again.
- Is your account name spelled correctly?
- Have you typed and capitalized your password correctly?
- Have you forgotten your password? Reset my password
- Did you forget your account name? Get help from Customer Support
- Have you correctly typed the name of a character on your account?

(Code=227)"

What is an Error Code=227?

An Error 227 indicates that you've entered an incorrect login name, character name, or password when attempting to access the game.

How do I fix an Error Code=227?

Please try logging into the game again. Make sure that your account name is correct, that you properly typed and capitalized your password, and that you entered the complete character name (capitals and spacing required) of a character on the account.

Here are a few troubleshooting steps you can try to solve the error:

  • Remember: your password is case-sensitive, meaning that all capital and lowercase letters must match the password used to access the account.
  • Make sure your CAPS LOCK key is not enabled when typing your password.
  • In the Account Name field, ensure your email address is correct.
  • Remember: Guild Wars characters will have a first and last name (at minimum).

If you've confirmed all of the above, here are a few additional steps you can try to access your account:

  • Type out your password in a notepad document—ensuring that there are no extra spaces or line breaks. Then select, copy, and paste the password into the Password field on the login screen.
  • Un-check the 'Remember Account Name and Security Answer' box and re-launch the client. In the blank fields, enter your Account Name (your email address), password, and a character on the account.
  • Try resetting your password.

If none of these steps work, please contact our Support team with a detailed description of the problem and the error message you are receiving.

Error 235 (Code=235)

Error Message

"... (Code=235)"

What is an Error Code=235?

An Error 235 indicates that you've already changed the name of the character you selected within the last 30 days—the minimum waiting time before you can change it again.

How do I fix an Error Code=235?

Since Guild Wars characters can only be renamed once every 30 days, you will have to wait the full 30 days from the last time you renamed that character in order to change its name again. Note that this doesn’t limit you from changing the names of other characters on your account during this period.

Error 241 (Code=241)

Error Message

"NET_ERR_TIMEOUT_AUTH_PORTAL"

What is an Error Code=241?

An Error Code 241 is an uncommon connection error that indicates a timeout between the client and the login (authentication) servers, usually when logging in to Guild Wars.

How do I fix an Error Code=241?

Though rare, an Error Code 241 can appear when the Guild Wars login servers are experiencing connectivity issues with the game client. In most cases, waiting a few minutes before re-entering your credentials should give the servers enough time to establish a stable connection and let you into the game.

If the error prevents you from playing the game, try working through these troubleshooting steps to see if you can establish a stable connection:

Error 244 (Code=244)

Error Message

"Network Error. Please check your connection to the Internet and try again. (Code=244)"

What is an Error Code=244?

An Error Code 244 means that you are trying to login to Guild Wars with an account that has a valid login, but does not have game access. This is usually the case after linking your Guild Wars and ArenaNet accounts, or when trying to use a Guild Wars 2 account that doesn't own the original Guild Wars.

How do I fix an Error Code=244?

If you are receiving an Error 244, check the following:

  • Do you have a Guild Wars 2 account? Try logging into the ArenaNet account management page with the account to verify that you also have access to Guild Wars.
  • If you linked the accounts in order to get the Hall of Monuments rewards in Guild Wars 2, use your ArenaNet account credentials to log into Guild Wars rather than your original credentials.
  • If your ArenaNet account email was changed at some point, be sure to use the correct email and password to access the game. If you no longer know your credentials, please contact support for assistance.
  • Some players have noted that logging into the ArenaNet account management page and verifying their IP address helps fix the issue. Try logging in and verifying any information requested by the site.
  • If you are still using an NCSoft Master account, please contact support so they can update your login credentials. Be sure to provide as many details about the account as possible, including the email address, character names, any CD keys, and any purchases made on the account.

Error 248 (Code=248)

Error Message

"Network Error. Please check your connection to the Internet and try again. (Code=248)"

What is an Error Code=248?

An Error Code 248 can denote multiple issues:

  • That you are attempting to play the game on an unsupported operating system.
  • An anti-virus program could be blocking the GwLoginClient.dll from being written to disk or successfully loading.

How do I fix an Error Code=248?

Guild Wars requires Windows XP or newer to play. If your computer meets the minimum specifications to run the game and is running on a supported operating system, here are some steps you can take to address the issue:

  • Download the latest Windows updates. If you have the option to upgrade to Service Pack 3, please do so.
  • Update your anti-virus program with the latest updates.
  • Add Gw.exe or GwSetup.exe to your firewall's exception list. If you have already allowed Guild Wars in the past, please double-check the exceptions; on some rare occasions, firewalls will decide to block Guild Wars after it has patched. If adding an exception does not help, please try completely uninstalling the firewall software.

Mac/Linux users who are using Wine or another emulation program should ensure that it's not running in Win2000 mode in order to play the game as intended.

Error 3006 (Code=3006)

Error Message

"Network Error. Please check your connection to the Internet and try again. (Code=3006)"

What is an Error Code=3006?

An Error Code 3006 is an account-creation or linking error that appears when a critical process has to complete before proceeding to the next step. It will usually appear when the servers are experiencing unusual loads or connectivity issues that disrupt the account-creation process, though it can also appear when trying to create a Guild Wars account using an email address that has already been used to create an account.

How do I fix an Error Code=3006?

There are a few steps you can take to troubleshoot the error:

  1. Give the process a few minutes to complete before trying to move to the next step.
  2. Add Gw.exe or GwSetup.exe to your firewall's exception list. If you have already allowed Guild Wars in the past, please double-check the exceptions; on some rare occasions, firewalls will decide to block Guild Wars after it has patched. If adding an exception does not help, please try completely uninstalling the firewall software.
  3. Even if the process fails, try accessing the account after giving it time to complete the registration process.

If you continue to experience issues, please contact our Support team with a detailed description of the problem and the error message you are receiving.
